Since Martha began this project, she has wondered which language to write in. She analyzes and writes better in English, but wants the book to be read by the descendants of the people she interviewed if not by the interviewees themselves. Should she write in English and find someone to translate?
The interviews themselves are in the second language of the speakers. Does she correct their Spanish? It hardly seems fair to them, but what about the reader who may find their Spanish rather strange.
Martha has always felt oral histories about Spain that were translated to English and then re-translated to Spanish from English lost some authenticity of speech.
Dilemnas.
